Howard Batetam oral history, 1968.

In this interview, Mr. Bateman shares his observations of the New York State sugar beet industry. Topics include: the discrepancies between the recommendations of Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Empire Sugar Company; his impressions of the Finger Lakes Sugar Beet Growers Association; the relationship between the growers association and the refinery, including contract negotiations and the procurement of migrant labor; and his impressions of James Garlick.

Howard Bateman was the agricultural extension agent of Seneca County, N.Y. from approximately 1954 until 1965. In 1965, he assumed responsibilities with the SUGAR BEET EXTENSION PROGRAM of the New York State College of Agriculture.
